Needless to say that urology is one of the most important areas of the medical science and research with ever expanding frontiers. Message from the Secretary of PAUS

secretory

"It is immense pleasure to welcome all participants on this auspicious occasion. Pakistan Association of Urological Surgeons has always tried to highlight problems related to Urology and disseminate knowledge. With the grace of Almighty Allah various departments of Urology in teaching hospitals have flourished at a very rapid pace and they are at par with the international institutions. So many distincts are also being seen very efficiently by trained urologist. Modern and minimally invasive techniques are being mastered by new trainees. Within next few years we are going to witness a revolution in minimally invasive surgery.
Efforts are being carried out to introduce urology as essential specialty to generate interest among the undergraduates.
I congratulate Prof. Zahid Iqbal and his team to organize this conference in Faisalabad inspite of uncertain security situation. His magnanimous efforts will go a long way in uplifting the specialty."

Prof. Riaz Ahmed Tasneem
General Secretary PAUS

Message from the Chairman Organizing Committee

chairman

"On behalf of the organizing committee I welcome delegates to the mainland textile centre of Punjab.
People here are humble, respectful and majority belongs to textile industry and agriculture. Weather hopefully will be fine in October. However we faced a bumpy road to organize this event due to many factors known to all of us. The threat of security on one hand forced us to change venue from Serene Hotel to the Punjab Medical College premises.
There would be many shortcomings for which I personally accept the responsibility and request you all to tolerate it.
I am thankful in particular to Indian delegates for sparing time and coming to Faisalabad on a short notice. Hopefully their stay will be comfortable and memorable one. I must thank the centre body of the PAUS in particular Professor Sajjad Hussain, Projfessor Riaz A. Tasneem, Professr Fawad Ahmed from Karachi, Professor Majid Rana and Dr. Zafar Zaidi for their criticism and motivation to “Just do it”.
I have full regards for my teachers in particular Professor Fateh Khan Akhter, Professor Farrukh A. Khan and Professor Adib-ul-Hassan Rizvi.
As a chairman of organizing committee their are many names whose untiring efforts and work remains in our mind but words cannot express their interest and love to do this continuing medical educational activity; the centre of which is a human being suffering from Urological diseases.
Local administration Principle, Medical Superintendent have offered us full support to manage this conference."

Professor Zahid Iqbal
Chairman Organizing Committee

Introduction to Faisalabad and Punjab Medical College

Faisalabad is an industrial city of Pakistan and the 3rd biggest city of Pakistan. It is situated 225 miles (360 kilometers) south of the capital Islamabad. It is linked to M2 motorway (Islamabad, Lahore section) with M-3 motorway Pindibhattian-Faisalabad section). It is called the Manchester of Pakistan as it is a big industrial center producing cotton and silk textiles, hosiery, dyes, agriculture equipment and ghee.
The city was founded by the British lieutenant Governor of Punjab, Sir, Charles James Lyall for whom it was originally named “Lyallpur” in 1880. Prior to its development as urban center by the British, it largely consisted of various villages. Construction of various canals allowed the area to be irrigated.
The city centre of Faisalabad was designed by Captain Poham Young to intimate the union Jack with eight roads/bazars radiating from a large clock tower in the center. This majestic clock tower of Faisalabad was constructed out of the funds raised by Sikh Zamindars. Faisalabad was initially tehsil of Jhang District and later it was developed as district and afterwards as divisional headquarters in 1985. Its name was changed to Faisalabad in 1977 after the name of the late king of Saudi Arabia, Shah Faisal-bin-Abdul Aziz..
The population of Faisalabad in 1901 hardly touched a few thousands, soared into millions now, and its education level has lifted up. Now it has three government universities and few other private universities. 2nd maximum numbers of publications in Pakistan are from Faisalabad. This time the venue of Urocon 2008 is Punjab Medical College, Faisalabad.
Punjab Medical College Faisalabad was established in 1973 and it has produced more than 5000 medical graduates till this year to serve the whole Country and aboard. It has attached with it 2 teaching hospitals (Allied Hospital & DHQ Hospital) with a strength of more than 1800 beds.
The Urology Section is headed by Prof. Dr. Zahid Iqbal. This Department has been recognized for FCPS training by the College of Physicians & Surgeons Pakistan and for MS training by University of Health Sciences Lahore. Three candidates from this Department have qualified FCPS urology.  The Department of Urology consists of a 60-bedded Unit. It caters for endo-urology, reconstructive surgery, open urological surgery and renal  transplantation. The slogan of Urocon 2008 is “Modern Urology for common man” as it is our aim to provide these modern facilities of urology to common citizen of Pakistan.
Faisalabad is draining about 20 millions population of Faisalabad and near by districts of Jhang, TT Singh, Sargodha, Sheikhopura, Layya and Mianwali. Faisalabad has got a an international airport where PIA & Air Blue connect this city with rest of the country and Dubai.
Faisalabad has pleasant weather in October. Faisalabad has got a 5 star hotel (Serena Hotel, Club Road Faisalabad) and other 3-4 star hotels including East Inn (Sargodha Road), Sandal Bar (Satyana Road), Rex (Satyan Road) and D continental (D-Ground).
There are few tourist spots near Faisalabad; one is river Chenab at Chiniot, 35 kilometers from Faisalabad and other is Gutt Wala on Lahore road in Faisalabad.

Pre-conference Symposium on “Morality of Renal Transplantation and Emerging issues in Renal Transplantation”

(8:00 PM to 10:00 PM)

EMERGING ISSUES IN RENAL TRANSPLANTATION

Rich Donor has never donated a kidney to a poor recipient. This world of transplantation remains in majority of cases for those who can afford. Can we break these barriers?
Pakistan has a population of 16.5 million with an agricultural based economy where 30-40% people live below poverty line. Approximate incidence of End Stage Renal Disease (ESRD) in Pakistan is about 100-250/million population as published in different studies.
Allied Hospital caters about a population of 09 million people; thus annually projected need for transplantation in Allied Hospital Faisalabad is 800 transplants per year. Organ transplantation has become so successful that there is a dier gap of organ supply and need of organs for transplantation. This shortage has brought serious consequence in our region. Vending donors from Sargodha villages got the attention of international media and brought a bad name for Pakistan.
Cadaveric donation is a successful modality in rest of the world where as we in Pakistan are desperately attempting to promote it. The immense need of organs has brought cruel practices in related / non-related organ donations in our country.
Potential donors receive payments though intermediate mafia and it has been sufficiently   highlighted in many published studies.
Transplantation today has developed with a middle man (an organ broker profiting), the poor donor frequently exploited and receiving poor medical care after donation. Hardly ever does a poor person receive a kidney from a rich donor (Sir Roy Cain).
All these issues would be the center of talk in this symposium and in particular the poor person of Pakistan around which this world revolves in Pakistan. Economics in particular is a great concern to us. We are really grateful to Government of the Punjab for providing free medicines to dialysis patients and to Renal Transplantation patients. We are encouraged by this act of generosity and hope to provide further facilities to common poor man of Pakistan.
